Woman wondering about TMJ disorder

When you eat, do you have trouble chewing or hear a popping sound? These are just a couple of signs of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. This condition causes chronic jaw pain, and it can be quite uncomfortable to deal with. However, as you research online about it, you may come across some myths. Here’s the truth behind three misconceptions you might’ve heard.

Myth #1: TMJ Disorder is Rare

Many people often assume that TMJ disorder (TMD) is relatively rare. In reality, it can affect about 1 in 10 people around the world. Not only that, but in the U.S. alone, it’s estimated that 35 million people suffer from a disorder in their TMJ or surrounding muscles. Although it can develop in anyone, women and those between the ages of 20 and 40 are more at risk of it.

Myth #2: TMD Isn’t That Serious

As was mentioned above, chronic jaw pain and trouble chewing are some symptoms of TMD. These may seem frustrating to deal with, but they can have an impact on your overall health. Some patients have trouble sleeping because of the discomfort they feel. They may also not be able to eat a balanced diet since they may avoid certain foods that flare their TMJ disorder.

Without getting enough rest or proper nutrition, it can affect your immune system. Your body may have more trouble fighting off infections or diseases.

Myth #3: You Need Surgery to Treat TMJ Disorder

Since TMD is an issue with your jaw joints, it’s easy to imagine that only surgery can fix it. However, there are a couple of different treatments that you may be able to try instead. A popular choice is occlusal splits. You wear this oral appliance when you sleep, and it will gently shift your jaw into a more ideal position. This can help relieve any stress and strain. Over time, your TMJ symptoms may even start to lessen.

Another option that you may have is equilibration/occlusal adjustment. For this service, your dentist will adjust the shape of your teeth so they sit together and fit more naturally. That way, you can get rid of some of the pressure your jaw may be experiencing.

While you may have believed these myths beforehand, remember the truth! The best way to learn more about TMJ disorder is by talking to a professional. By visiting your dentist, they can help find the cause of this condition for you and give you the treatment that you deserve.
