A woman discussing jaw pain with her dentist

November is TMJ Awareness month, and the perfect opportunity to learn more about the importance of your temporomandibular joint. Here’s a closer look at how if you’re experiencing any TMJ disorder discomfort, your dentist can help you get some much needed relief!

What is the Temporomandibular Joint?

The temporomandibular (TMJ) joint is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the upper jaw and allows it to open and close your mouth when you eat and speak.

What Is TMJ Disorder?

A TMJ disorder occurs when the temporomandibular joint becomes misaligned from the sockets, causing a variety of symptoms including:

  • Clicking and popping sounds when you open and close your mouth.
  • Jaw stiffness or difficulty opening your mouth.
  • Jaw pain.
  • Migraine headaches.
  • Neck, back, or shoulder pain.
  • Ringing of the ears (tinnitus).

How Can My Dentist Treat TMJ Disorder?

Although there is no one-size-fits-all treatment for TMJ disorder, your dentist has options for treatment. These may include one or more of the following:

  • Occlusal Splint: Your dental team will take impressions of your mouth and send them to a dental laboratory, where an orthotic device will be custom made just for you. This orthotic is designed to wear while you sleep, and will reposition your jaw, so it is aligned properly to alleviate pain and pressure due to TMJ disorder.  Over time, you should experience an improvement in your painful symptoms.
  • Equilibration / Occlusal Adjustment: These options are typically used in more severe cases, or when other options are unsuccessful. They often involve adjustments to previous dental work that could be putting the jaw out of alignment, or they could also incorporate orthodontic care, an occlusal splint, or surgical treatments.

Remember, while TMJ disorder pain can make everyday activities like eating and speaking painful or difficult, your dentist can help treat this often-debilitating condition and restore your pain-free smile. To learn more about TMJ treatment, schedule a consultation with your dentist today.
